Femme Fettle: The US is now a 'woman's nation'
The recent hoopla in India over legislative quotas for women has attracted considerable attention in America.
You've Come a Long Way, Baby" was a marketing slogan used by the tobacco company Phillip Morris to sell Virginia Slims cigarettes to young professional women in the 1960s. The catchphrase conveyed to American women that they were catching up with men in many ways - not always for the good, as it turned out. Female smoking increased rapidly in the '70s and '80s. Fortunately, the unhealthy fad faded. By the 1990s, the new promotional slogan, "Find Your Voice" , was greeted with snickers because the US surgeon general's warning that smoking could cause voice-destroying cancer was more potent than upbeat marketing spiel.
Indeed, American women have truly come a long way now, although they have some distance to go. The recent hoopla in India over legislative quotas for women has attracted considerable attention here, even as the US itself is in ferment over the Shriver Report, a study on female participation in the workforce, about which more shortly.
First the political bit: Around the world, 18.8 per cent of national parliamentary positions are held by women, according to surveys by the Inter-Parliamentary Union. Both the United States and India, the world's two largest democracies, fall below this average. In India, only 10.8 per cent of seats in legislatures are held by women; the figure for the US is 16.8 per cent.
The world leader in female political empowerment? Hold your breath: It's the formerly tortured African nation of Rwanda, which already has the constitutional requirement (which India is agonising over) that at least 30 per cent of its parliamentary seats must go to women. In 2008, Rwanda overshot the mark, and elected women to 45 out of 80 parliamentary seats, or 56.25 per cent. Now you can see why the Yadavs and their herd are stampeding in panic.
But is legislative quota a good metric to gauge female empowerment and progress? There's an argument that a career as a politician is not exactly family-friendly , and women shun politics because they don't like its rough and tumble, especially in gruelling democracies such as India and the US. Both countries abound in women coming into politics through family ties rather than grassroots growth. Will quotas fix the problem?
Here's where the Shriver Report kicks in. Released in October 2009 to much delight and debate, it shows a broader aspect of female empowerment. For the first time in US history, the study reveals, almost half of US workers (49.5 per cent) are female. Mothers have become the primary breadwinners in four in 10 American families even as men are cheering them on and taking a back seat in a recession-era economy (they hardly have a choice; they account for three out of four jobs lost).
Signaling a sea change in social and family dynamics from 40 years ago, the report slices and dices this transformation in different ways: Female income now puts food on the table and roof over heads in America nearly as much as men's earnings. In fact, half of all families rely on the earnings of two parents. In more than 20 per cent of all families, a single mother is the primary breadwinner; 70 per cent of families with kids include a working mother.
Looking at it from the education angle, the report shows women now earn 60 per cent of college degrees awarded each year, and 50 per cent of the PhDs and professional degrees. Almost 40 per cent of working women hold managerial and other professional positions. Women make 80 per cent of buying decisions in American homes.
The number of women working for themselves doubled between 1979 and 2003, so that women make up 35 per cent of all self-employed Americans. The number of women-owned businesses is growing at a rate of 23 per cent, 2.5 times faster than the growth in the number of total businesses. Companies led by women are proving to have healthier bottom lines. Will legislative quotas bring this about?
It's not a perfect situation, and there are still issues like wage/salary differentials. But you can't miss the signs - three of the last four secretaries of state have been women; and women ran for president and vice-president in the last election. It's progress enough for Maria Shriver - author of the report, Kennedy scion, and lastly the first lady of California - to now call America a "Woman's Nation" . They got here pretty much without quotas.

Leafy vegetables
It is not possible to meet your nutritional needs without having leafy vegetables in your diet. Spinach, legumes, asparagus, lettuce, fenugreek leaves, broccoli are available in abundance and are huge sources of fibre, Vitamin C and K, folic acid. It is also a vision protector and provides four essential minerals, i.e. calcium, magnesium, iron and potassium. Try to have it daily in your diet and darker the better.
Whole grains
Whole grains have up to 96 per cent more fibre and essential nutrients and vitamins than refined grains. Advises diet expert Honey Shah, "I advise my clients to have whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta, and brown rice as they are high in essential nutrients and do not contribute to weight gain. You can start your day with whole wheat cereal or a whole wheat bread toast."
Nuts
Make nuts an essential ingredient in your diet. Sprinkle it on salads or breakfast cereals or stir them into yoghurt because they are an excellent source of protein, magnesium and B & E vitamins. They are useful in fighting heart disease and cancer. Nuts are high in fat calories, but their fat is the heart-healthy kind. You can also eat them as an evening snack. But make sure you don't overdo them. About a quarter cup or about 15-20 almonds, cashews, walnuts are good enough a week.
Yoghurt
Low fat or plain yoghurt is a great source of vitamins, protein and calcium. It also has healthy bacteria which can fight diseases. "Three to four cups a week is good enough for your diet. But make sure you don't add sugar to it. Instead choose plain yoghurt and add fruits or berries to it," suggests dietician Pinky.

Berries have more protective plant antioxidants than almost any other food. These antioxidants not only lower your disease risks, but also help prevent memory loss. See Love, Sex & Dhokha with family: Dibakar
It would be a crime to have a subject as bold as ALT Entertainment’s Love Sex Aur Dhokha and not to ask director Dibakar Banerjee about the controversies surrounding it. Talking about the theme of voyeurism which is the crux of his film, he says, “I made a film I believe in without the intention of creating a controversy, the controversy is an after effect.” He smirks on being questioned about an unusual title like LSD and wittily replies, “My mum was a little hesitant while pronouncing the title at a stretch.”
The title track of LSD is ruling charts all over and Dibakar is all smiles about it, “It’s a great feeling when small films that need all the publicity acquire the same on their merit, thanks to the catchy music of the film. This is the first lip-synch song I have ever used in any of my films and has an extremely intricate relationship with the movie.” Looks like everyone wants a little bit of LSD these days!

Since the film is slated for release on March 19, we ask Dibakar about last minute apprehensions prior to the release. “I just hope this film does not get misunderstood for being what it’s not and the desired message is conveyed to the audience,” he says. Dibakar is confident of not losing out on family audience and in fact, says that his film is a must watch for families in the modern century where parents and children are more like friends. The next time you approach a girl, do not hesitate to try out a cheesy chat-up line because girls absolutely love it, for they give a glimpse of a man's sense of humour.
According to a study, six out of 10 ladies are more likely to fall for a man if he breaks the ice with a light-hearted one-liner.
Conducted by www.OnePoll.com, the survey, which questioned 4,000 adults, revealed that four out of 10 women were still dating or were married to a man who first approached them with a funny quip.
However, not every line can do the trick for you-it was found that there are do's and don'ts in the dating game as well.
Lines such as "Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?", and "Apart from being beautiful, what do you do for a living?" worked "most of the time".
But "Do you have a map? Because I keep getting lost in your eyes" and "Is there a rainbow, because you're the treasure I've been searching for," were likely to end up in red-faced failure for being "too over the top".
The study found that seven out of 10 women like being chatted up while out with friends as it gives their confidence a boost - as long as the potential suitor is good looking.

Sex and the Swami...
The priest as transgressive protagonist has been the subject of many books in fiction. But suddenly they seem to have jumped right out of the pages and into real life, blurring boundaries between the profound and the profane. Has saffron been irredeemably stained?

His cronies, writhing in front of a large picture of Shirdi Sai Baba, match him step for step. Check it out on YouTube; a more grotesque and hilarious sight will rarely be seen. And Nityananda's "disciple", the actress Ranjitha, has said that her videographed romp with the so-called swami was her "service and offering to him". She said she offered it like she offered other services: bringing Nityananda food and giving him a massage. She seemed to see nothing wrong in what she was doing.

But, to focus on sex and spirituality, ever since Osho Rajneesh's extraordinary success in teaching that sex could be transcended only through experience and not through its renunciation, many "swamis" appear to have rampantly and readily misunderstood what he said. Rajneesh's take on sex - he wrote the controversial book Sambhog se Samadhi (From Sex to Superconsciousness) - was backed by a cogently argued philosophy.
According to him, forced celibacy was not just wrong, it was damaging to the soul of man. It was against man's natural instincts and his essential nature. Celibacy as a vow had to be voluntary, and under the guidance of a capable preceptor. Otherwise there was every possibility of the act of self-mortification destroying the initiate. Going by Rajneesh's dictum, someone like Nityanand was ill-prepared for a life of complete detachment.
But there is a need to first understand the monastic order in Hinduism and its provenance. Hinduism borrowed the concept of monasteries - and its peculiar kind of celibacy - from Buddhism. This was because Buddhism had grown to become one massive umbrella that held vast swathes of the Indian subcontinent in near-total control by the 8th century. When Adi Shankaracharya arrived on the scene to take Sanatan Dharma out of the morass, he selected some of the attributes of Buddhism to reinvent Hinduism. It was also his own tribute to the success of Buddhism.
In other words, there was no concept of renunciation in Hinduism until Shankara arrived, at least not in any organised sort of way. The best that exists in Sanatani philosophy on the subject is Patanjali's statement, 'Swa-ang jugupsa, parai asansargah'. It means that with increasing spiritual insights, with greater realisation, with the mind's constant attachment with truth, there develops apathy for the physical body, and it loses its physical affiliation with others. This is considered a high state of spiritual being, and that is what has made celibacy the plinth of sanyas. Before Shankara, Indian rishis were known to have families and children. Shankara was merely following the "market leader" of the time, Buddhism, and in the process institutionalised renunciation to help Hinduism survive the crisis it was in because of Buddhism.
What's truly lamentable about those donning saffron but flouting the principles they erroneously pledged to uphold - including celibacy - is that they have forgotten the deep Sanatani value that their raiment represents.
Interestingly, in this as well, in the idea of a single-colour garment to represent a monastic order, the competitive interplay between Buddhism and Hinduism is evident. The Buddha had selected yellow as the colour of renunciation; yellow being the shade of falling leaves at the end of the Indian winter. Yellow signified a bhikshu's final departure from the world of desires.
Shankara, too, wanted to give the Sanatani monastic order he had created a mark of distinction out of the cultural necessity to successfully compete with Buddhism. He found the colour saffron - a bright orange - from the sacrificial fire. He said anyone who wears this robe must imagine himself sitting on 'chitaa' or the funerary pyre, burning all his past samskaras and making sure that no new ones are added. For it was only after all the samskaras were burnt that vairagya or dispassion could develop, and with it the spiritual insights for which one had made the conscious decision to become a sadhu or a sanyasi.
It is obvious that none of this terribly excites the likes of the Ichadharis and Nityanandas. But it would only be fair to pose that, in the process, our true saints must not invite derision or ridicule. It would be folly to tar all the saffron-robed monks with the same brush. Instead, what is needed is more discernment among people in choosing their preceptor - that is, if they think they need one in the first place.
Indeed, charlatans like Ichadhari would not become an embarrassment in the name of religion without the help of blindly-worshipful people. The success - howsoever temporary - of these fake swamis also exposes the alarming levels of ignorance in society. Tantriks, exploiting the superstitions among people, are routinely in the news for rape and murder for money, making them no different from thugs and mercenaries. In March 2009, the Mumbai police arrested a tantrik, Hansmukh Rathod, and the parents of a girl who was sexually violated by her father, to improve his business.
There is no reason to believe such things will come to an end, especially when there has been a spate of scandals involving the hollow 'holy' men. As Swami Dharmendra said on a TV talk show this week, "If adulterating medicines is a crime, then adulterating faith, too, should be a crime. Bhakti must remain pure in the heart of the bhakta."
Sex," said Henry Miller, "is one of the nine reasons of reincarnation; the other eight are unimportant." He was paraphrasing an unnamed source from Buddhism, a religion which, not incorrectly, is seen as an offshoot of Hinduism. And it is the Hindu 'godmen' - read, fakes or fraudsters - who have for the past week been swathed in infamy for sex and sleaze.
While one of them, Swami Nityananda of Chennai, was caught having sex with a Tamil actress, the other, going by the laughable moniker of Ichadhari Sant Bhimanand (ichhadhari, literally, means one who merely has to wish for things to happen) was arrested and charged under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) for running a prostitution racket. Interestingly, the 'saint' has been to jail five times.
Bhimanand, whose actual name is Shiv Murat Dwivedi, has been filmed doing the 'naagin (snake-woman ) dance', seemingly drunk, to the tune of the famous snake song Man doley, mera tan doley. His cronies, writhing in front of a large picture of Shirdi Sai Baba, match him step for step. Check it out on YouTube; a more grotesque and hilarious sight will rarely be seen. And Nityananda's "disciple", the actress Ranjitha, has said that her videographed romp with the so-called swami was her "service and offering to him". She said she offered it like she offered other services: bringing Nityananda food and giving him a massage. She seemed to see nothing wrong in what she was doing.
